The most anticipated race of the season so far takes place on the 5th June as the Red Bull Ring makes it debut. The track which was formerly known as the A1 Ring, and the Österreichring before that, closed down back in 2004 and has since been demolished and totally rebuilt. Red Bull mogul Dietrich Mateschitz has thrown an impressive €70m at the reconstruction which has received Formula 1 standard homologation. The track has hosted seven rounds of the Formula 1 Championship over the years, as well as various other international events.
It is located in Spielberg, Styria, Austria where a race track has existed in one form or another since 1969. Its history has seen several different layouts, with the original track measuring 5.9km. From 1996 to 2005 it measured in at 4.3km, similar to the brand spanking new track now. They have also used sections of the Österreichring for the rebuild which should add another challenge.
The circuit officially re-opened at a special event over the weekend of May 15th & 16th which included displays from various Red Bull sponsored teams including Red Bull Racing. The FIA Historic Formula One Championship provided the headline race attraction with a race on each day for Formula One cars from the 3 litre period, international superstars Webber, Vettel and Loeb were all in attendance.
The hope is that F1 could finally make a long overdue return to the venue , with billionaire Mateschitz himself rating the chances as “more than minor”. While Formula 1 chief executive Ecclestonewas quoted as saying, was quoted as saying, “Everything is possible.”
Only time will tell if the Austrian city will once again sample the glamour of F1, but the future of motorsport certainly looks bright for Spielberg.
